Day 49: The march to Walker pass
Start: 630.84 Birds spring pass
End: 651.35 Walker pass
In this high heat I have hit a rhythm. I get up, hike till 11ish, hide from the 98 degree sun and then continue hiking at about four.
Today is more of the same.
Every day, even with water available, is a nightmare worrying about water. Today I loaded 6.5 liters, hiked up a big hill 1500 feet, used 1. Stopped and cooked a double meal, used 1. Hiked until I hit a campground where I could hide from the sun… Used 1.5…
I am 7.5 miles in, and have 3 liters left. This math doesn’t work out considering I have 13 miles to go.
I expect I’ll use 1 liter just sitting here in the shade.
On the bright side, there is very little elevation change for half of the rest of my day, and then it is all downhill for six miles to Walker pass where there is water. If I can make it to the top of that hill, the combination of cooler evening/night temps and not exerting myself walking downhill, I think I’ll be okay.
It turns out I did a lot better than I expected. I only used a quarter liter as I snoozed and did my best to limit exertion during the hot part of the day, then the remaining three quarters liter lasted a bit over six miles! Yeah, I’m not sure how that is possible either, it was at least 80 degrees, maybe 85 or 90. Anyway, the next liter was not even half gone when I reached the six mile downhill so I guzzled it, and didn’t use the whole third liter going down.
Big surprise at the bottom! Coppertone was there with Meadow Ed serving root beer floats and glorious food!
Damn I’m dirty.
