Day 38: I saw a huge nasty bug – 2 inches long
… And as a result don’t feel like cowboy camping
End: 508.14 horse camp
So far I have skipped 101 due to closures/road walk alternates, and 6 because of injury. 107 miles total in the first 500. That kind of bothers me.
Left Casa de Luna, was up at six, but rides being what they are I didn’t make it to the trail until 10. Started the day with a 2 mile spur trail to get back on the PCT and it was a climb. I was going too slowly to hike with anyone so had the whole day to myself.
The two biggest problems are my heels hurt, and the damn gnats!
Crossed the 500 mile mark, and about three miles later the trail finally leveled off for an easy five or so miles in to camp.
Met some new people in camp, Ivana from the Cech Republic was one and she was having trouble with her zpacks tent, she wasn’t getting the pitch right and it was making for bad sleeping. Needs new stakes and I showed her how to adjust it for a roomier pitch, I think that helped.
The water source here is .2 miles straight down. It is a bit of a slog, but tastes so good! Charles “Focus” Hough — water conniseur and snob! (Sp)
Looks like an easy 9 miles to hiker town next. Descent down in to the desert proper! Looking forward to it.
Several signs at and near 500:
