Day 20: A hard day… With a few awesome things.
Start: 318.0 bush camp
End: 335.30 bush camp
Fitbit: either died or needs to be charged.
When I woke up this morning, I knew right away that I hadn’t recovered from yesterday. I didn’t want to get out of bed, then I really didn’t want to move. The only answer was to suffer for a short 10 miles (eyeroll). It was kind of brutal. Probably the hottest day so far. I don’t know the temps, but maybe 85 or 90.
The trail wound around a lake and I finally made it to a state park.
Do you know how awesome picnic tables are?? They are AMAZING. You can lie down on them, reorganize you pack on them, cook on them, chat with others on them, or in my case keel over and pretend I am never going to get up again.
A really awesome park ranger lady saw I was toast and gave me a sports drink and two energy bars. That probably accelerated my recovery by an hour. Then she took money from all the hikers and returned with cold cokes. Fabulous. I wish I had gotten her name.
I hung out from noon to five-ish, then went searching for showers with Swiss sisters trash panda and she bear. We got clean and a Vietnam vet rolled up in a scooter, he clearly had trouble walking, but he asked us several questions and then offered to feed us Bratwurst and cokes. PERFECT! I stoked up the briquettes and slowly cooked the brats. Yum yum yum — Thank you Paul!
We left around 8pm and hiked till 10:30 ish. Found a good cowboy camping spot tucked away, and li and behold another hiker was already sleeping there.
I am Pooped. Good night.
Yes, the PCT went straight through the middle of the yard with these things in it. Too bad I didn’t take a photo from inside.
Little nightsnake we almost stepped on. “California Nightsnake”
