Day 15: A zero from here to there
Skipped from 210.8 to 266ish — another trail closure.
Woke up at Ziggy and the Bear, needed to wait till 11 or so to get my package, and changed plans. Instead of paying $10 to shuttle to town and another $10 to bus it to big bear, Ellie rented a pickup truck and we split the cost five ways $30 apiece.
Right before leaving, The Bear caught a beautiful 3-4 foot snake. Best I can tell (same link as yesterday) it was a “Desert Glossy Snake”
Ellie drives like a bat out of hell, and I wanted to call her lead foot, but that doesn’t really work as a trail name so we came up with TURBO. It is an apt description of her overall, and I think it will stick. On the drive up in the mountains the temp dropped below freezing and it was snowing.
We arrived at our lodge hostel, with hiker discount it is $27, includes hot showers, laundry, dinner and breakfast. Has a wonderful game room and big lodgy community area — with wifi! ^.^
I went out and bought a 20oz bottle of peanut butter porter. It was DELICIOUS! I sat and drank it with a really cute English couple, and talked a lot about the trail. Showed them “the longest way” on YouTube– look it up, it is wonderful and was my original inspiration to do the trail.
Right as I was finishing my beer, Anne, who trucked it into town with me and is one of my three bunk mates in the hostel invited me out to a brewery. I collected our other two bunk mates, “Bad Mash” and Jesse, and we walked to the brewery. Naturally we found a dozen other hiker trash. I “tried” to drink a single beer and call it quits, but next thing you know more of my friends from the trail show up and are buying me more drinks. If estimate 5 high octane beers total… That is a LOT of alcohol for me. But… It was also one of the most fun nights out drinking I’ve ever had.
We walked back, went to bed, I probably peed four times. Woke up with only a mild hangover (thanks to drinking three glasses of water)
Big Bold Badass – TURBO!
Pure snow! We could market this stuff!
