Day 106: We do the most worthwhile things in life because it is difficult, not because it is easy.

Day 106: We do the most worthwhile things in life because it is difficult, not because it is easy.

Title is a paraphrased/reordered quote I heard on a podcast today. Apparently originating from JFK. Heard it from US Senator Cory Booker on a freakanomics episode. Man, I wish all senators sounded like him!

.
Start: 1247.25 at a river which has a name…
End: 1265.43 right off the road near Bucks Lake.
1259 – mileage of logging photo. About 100 feet from trail. Grrr.
.
Before I forget to mention it, take a look at the photos with the trail in them. The flora changed radically every few minutes today. Maybe 5+ different biomes. It was a trip.
.
The river I camped at had warm water. I attired myself in my birthday suit and took a full body dip, hair included.
.
I turned on some podcasts and tuned out. Tons of uphill today, pretty country. Uphill is almost as easy for me now as hiking on the level. I noticed at one point that I had been hiking a pretty serious uphill for half an hour or so and wasn’t winded. I think the only time I might have been in as good of shape is when I was a teenager and dad was climbing Rainier. I walked up to Muir with nothing but shorts and a tee shirt and “hi dad!”. He had climbed up starting at 6am and the rest of the family went to Paradise below him for the day. He was a little surprised (and maybe terrified that I was up there with no gear) to see me.
.
So today was maybe the third day hiking completely alone. Every day I ran across another hiker ‘Blackout’ but didn’t talk much. I hitched in to Bucks lake and realized I was having trouble talking – literally – because I was out of practice. Been a few years (and unemployment) since that’s happened. Kinda neat, and very odd. It is kind of like I think the response I want to say, but it takes a few seconds to translate it into words… Or maybe the speed/flow of thought no longer matches the speed of speech. Not sure I can explain it well to someone who hasn’t experienced it.
.
Bucks lake is a nice little resort town. Good food. Good beer. Forgot to fulfill my ice cream fantasy damnit!
.
This Day One journal app I initially jot down my blog entries in seems to have a memory leak or some such. Freezes after I save an entry. Annoying.
